An appraisal of the phylogenetic relationships of Hypoptopomatini cascudinhos with description of two new genera and three new species (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Delapieve,Maria Laura S.; Lehmann A,Pablo; Reis,Roberto E..
ABSTRACT The discovery of three new taxa of Hypoptotopomatini with ambiguous generic assignment prompted a reanalysis of the phylogenetic relationships of the tribe. The analysis focused on a data matrix of 56 terminals and 107 morphological characters comprising the three new taxa, most species of Hypoptopoma and Otocinclus, and all other species of the tribe. The 162 maximally parsimonious trees of 382 steps, consistency index of 0.41, and retention index of 0.83 were then summarized in a strict consensus tree. The results confirm the monophyly of the Hypoptopomatini, recover four genera as monophyletic (Acestridium, Hypoptopoma, Niobichthys, and Otocinclus), revealed Hypoptopoma and Oxyropsis to be non-monophyletic; and revealed two new genera within...

An emended description and phylogeny of the little-known Prorocentrum sipadanense Mohammad-Noor, Daugbjerg & Moestrup (Prorocentrales, Dinophyceae) from the Indian Ocean, Oman ArchiMer
Saburova, Maria; Chomerat, Nicolas.
A small Prorocentrum species was found during a pilot taxonomic survey of marine benthic dinoflagellates in the northwestern Arabian Sea, Oman. Based on the study of cells from natural samples and laboratory cultures using light and scanning electron microscopy, this taxon is attributed to the little-known Prorocentrum sipadanense, recorded so far only from East Malaysia. The description of this species has been emended to include details of internal cell structure, composition of its periflagellar area and intraspecific variability in size, shape and pore pattern. Round to oval or ovoid cells of P. sipadanese are surrounded by a prominent marginal ridge and are 17.9–23.9 µm long and 15.0–19.8 µm wide, with a foveate to reticulate thecal plate surface and...

An Osteometric Evaluation of the Mandibular Condyle in a Black KwaZulu-Natal Population International Journal of Morphology
Ishwarkumar,S; Pillay,P; DeGama,B. Z; Satyapal,K. S.
The mandibular condyle is the rounded protuberance that articulates with the mandibular fossa to form the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The shape of the mandibular condyle may be classified according to five basic shapes viz. flattened, convex, angled, rounded and concave. Previous research indicated that variation in the shape and size of the mandibular condyle, exists and that population-specific differences may also occur. This study aimed to document the shapes and size of the mandibular condyle and determine their relationship with regard to sex, age and race (if any). The morphometric and morphological parameters of the mandibular condyle were measured and assessed in 54 dry mandible specimens (n= 108). The Wedel et al. (1978) classification scheme...

An unusual, dwarf new species of Neotropical freshwater stingray, Plesiotrygon nana sp. nov., from the upper and mid Amazon basin: the second species of Plesiotrygon (Chondrichthyes: Potamotrygonidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Carvalho,Marcelo R. de; Ragno,Maíra P..
A new species of the relatively poorly known Neotropical freshwater stingray genus Plesiotrygon Rosa, Castello & Thorson, 1987 is described from the main channel and smaller tributaries (Ríos Itaya and Pachitea) of the upper Amazon basin in Peru. The first specimen to be collected, however, was from much farther east in Rio Solimões in 1996, just down-river from Rio Purus (specimen unavailable for this study). Plesiotrygon nana sp. nov., is a very distinctive and unusually small species of freshwater stingray (Potamotrygonidae), described here mostly from three specimens representing different size classes and stages of sexual maturity. Plesiotrygon nana sp. nov., is distinguished from its only congener, P. iwamae Rosa, Castello & Thorson,...

Anatomical Indicators of Dominance between the Coronary Arteries of Dogs International Journal of Morphology
Oliveira,Carla Lívia Santos de; David,Gustavo Serra; Carvalho,Michelly de Oliveira; Dornelas,; Araújo,Sandra; da Silva,Nailton Cavalcante; Ruiz,Cristiane Regina; Fernandes,Juliana Ruiz; Wafae,Nader.
In humans, the right coronary artery is dominant. However, we did not find any citations in the literature concerning anatomical indicators of dominance among dogs. We used 30 hearts from mongrels of both sexes, fixed in 10% formalin. The branches of the coronary arteries were dissected with special attention to the levels that were considered to be reference points. In 96.7%, the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery reached or went beyond the crux cordis. The subsinuosus interventricular artery, ended before reaching the apex in 21 cases, at the apex in five cases and after the apex in four cases. The paraconal interventricular artery, ended before reaching the apex in two cases, at the apex in 11 cases and after the apex in 17 cases. The region...

Antennule development during copepodite phase of some representatives of Harpacticoida (Copepoda, Crustacea) Naturalis
Dahms, Hans-Uwe.
The copepodite antennule development of representatives of 6 harpacticoid families is studied and discussed in detail and that of 8 genera of harpacticoids from 7 families is schematically illustrated. Twenty-seven genera out of 17 harpacticoid families are compared on the basis of own investigations and data from the literature. The origin of newly formed segments can be determined by seta numbers of segments, relative segment length, furrows indicating previous articulations and by the position of the segment which bears the proximal aesthetasc. There are 2 zones of segment formation, both located in the middle part of the first antenna. Normal segment formation takes place distally from the second, aesthetasc-bearing segment from C I to C II and...

Applications of image analysis in the characterization of Streptomyces olindensis in submerged culture BJM
Pamboukian,Celso R. Denser; Guimarães,Luciana M.; Facciotti,Maria Cândida R..
The morphology of Streptomyces olindensis (producer of retamycin, an antitumor antibiotic) grown in submerged culture was assessed by image analysis. The morphology was differentiated into four classes: pellets, clumps (or entangled filaments), branched and unbranched free filaments. Four morphological parameters were initially considered (area, convex area, perimeter, and convex perimeter) but only two parameters (perimeter and convex perimeter) were chosen to automatically classify the cells into the four morphological classes, using histogram analysis. Each morphological class was evaluated during growth carried out in liquid media in fermenter or shaker. It was found that pellets and clumps dominated in early growth stages in fermenter (due to the...
